Frequently asked questions
What is the HELP repayment threshold for 2026–27?
$69,528 of repayment income. Below it you repay nothing; above it you repay 15c for each dollar over, rising to 17c above $129,717, and 10% of all repayment income from $186,051.
What counts as repayment income?
Taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses (including rental losses), reportable super contributions (such as salary sacrifice) and exempt foreign employment income.
Do other study loans use the same rates?
Yes. VET Student Loans, the Student Financial Supplement Scheme, Student Start-up Loans and Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans share the same thresholds; HELP is repaid first.
Does my employer take HELP out of my pay?
Yes, if you tell them about the debt. They withhold an extra amount from each pay under ATO Schedule 8, which is credited against the repayment on your return.
Is this tax advice?
No. Results are estimates from the published ATO and Fair Work rules for the cases the calculator covers. Your own circumstances can change the result; check with the ATO, Fair Work or a registered tax agent before you rely on a figure.
