GST calculator for New Zealand
GST in New Zealand is 15%, so the GST inside a GST-inclusive price is 3/23 of it: $115 includes $15 of GST on a $100 price.
Enter any amount to add GST to it or take GST out of it.
How it's worked out
Adding GST: price × 15% = GST; price × 1.15 = total. Removing GST: total × 3 ÷ 23 = GST; total ÷ 1.15 = price before GST.
Worked example: $115 including GST
Taking GST out of a $115 price:
| Result | Amount |
|---|---|
| Price excluding GST | $100.00 |
| GST at 15% | $15.00 |
| Price including GST | $115.00 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Multiply by 3 and divide by 23 (the same as dividing by 7.667). For $230 that is $30 of GST and $200 before GST.
How do I add GST?
Multiply by 1.15. A $200 price becomes $230.
Why is it 3/23 and not 15%?
Because 15% is charged on the price before GST. In a GST-inclusive price, GST is 15 parts out of 115, which simplifies to 3/23.
Who has to register for GST?
You must register if your taxable activity's turnover was at least $60,000 in the last 12 months or you expect it to be in the next 12. Below that, registering is optional.
Is this tax advice?
No. Results are estimates from Inland Revenue's published rules for the cases the calculator covers. Check with Inland Revenue or a tax adviser before you rely on a figure.
