Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100) to get the base price. GST = total − base. For ₹11,800 at 18%: 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, so GST is ₹1,800.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies to inter-state supplies (seller and buyer in different states) and imports. Intra-state supplies split the same rate equally into CGST and SGST.
What are the GST slabs in India?
The common slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, plus special rates such as 3% for gold. From 22 September 2025 the GST Council rationalised most goods into 5% and 18% with a 40% rate for luxury/sin goods — check the current rate for your HSN/SAC code.
