A $72,000 salary leaves you $58,440 after tax in 2026–27: $4,870.00 a month, $2,247.69 a fortnight or $1,123.85 a week, averaged over the year.
That is after $12,120 of income tax and $1,440 of Medicare levy, an effective rate of 18.8%. Enter your own salary for the full breakdown, or open one of the worked salaries below.
How it's worked out
Tax on taxable income comes from the resident rates below. The low income tax offset is subtracted (it can't go below zero and doesn't reduce the Medicare levy), then the 2% Medicare levy is added, reduced for low incomes. A HELP debt adds a compulsory repayment on your repayment income. What is left, divided by 12, 26 or 52, is your take-home pay.
| Taxable income | Tax on this income |
|---|---|
| $0 – $18,200 | Nil |
| $18,201 – $45,000 | 15c for each $1 over $18,200 |
| $45,001 – $135,000 | $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000 |
| $135,001 – $190,000 | $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000 |
| $190,001 and over | $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000 |

Frequently asked questions
What is the take-home pay on $72,000 in 2026–27?
$58,440 a year, or $2,247.69 a fortnight, for a resident with no study loan. Tax is $12,120 plus a $1,440 Medicare levy; the low income tax offset is nil at this income. The worked salary pages below go through 16 other salaries in detail.
What is the difference between effective and marginal rate?
The effective rate is all your tax divided by your salary. The marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar: it includes the Medicare levy and, at lower incomes, the low income tax offset phasing out and HELP repayments starting.
Does salary sacrifice reduce my tax?
Yes. Salary sacrificed into super comes out before income tax, so your taxable income falls. It is taxed in the fund instead (usually at 15%), and it still counts as repayment income for HELP.
Why does my payslip show a different amount?
Payslips show withholding, worked out per pay with ATO formulas, not the assessed tax for the year. Use the pay calculator to see the withholding for each pay frequency.
Is this tax advice?
No. Results are estimates from the published ATO and Fair Work rules for the cases the calculator covers. Your own circumstances can change the result; check with the ATO, Fair Work or a registered tax agent before you rely on a figure.
