Frequently asked questions
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month and credited at the end of the financial year. Depositing before the 5th of April (or of each month) maximises interest; this calculator assumes the yearly deposit is made before 5 April.
What is the current PPF interest rate?
7.1% per annum for October–December 2026. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter, so the rate on your account can change.
Is PPF tax-free?
PPF is in the exempt-exempt-exempt category: interest and maturity are tax-free, and deposits qualify for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction under the old tax regime only.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits, by applying within one year of maturity.
